Emergency Response Drills: How Often Is Enough?

How often do you conduct emergency response drills at your plant? We currently do them twice a year, but after a recent near-miss, I’m wondering if we should increase the frequency. Thoughts?

We do quarterly drills, and each one focuses on a specific scenario—fire, chemical spill, turbine trip, etc. Keeps the team sharp and covers all bases over the year. Twice a year feels light if your plant has high-risk zones.

@SafetyFirstDave, it depends on your plant’s layout and risk profile. For example, plants with ammonia storage or large fuel tanks need more frequent drills. Also, don’t just stick to planned drills—surprise exercises are great for evaluating real preparedness.

We upped our frequency to monthly after a turbine overspeed incident last year. It’s a bit resource-heavy, but the improvement in response times and coordination has been worth it.
